Tearaway, originally released on the PlayStation Vita in late 2013, will be coming to the PS4 soon as an enhanced remastered version. The game is called Tearaway Unfolded and will feature many new changes from the Vita version.Media Molecule’s( Little Big Planet creators) Tearaway is a charming world full of paper and crafts, the whole game has a stop-motion sort of feel to it and it felt right at home on the Vita. But since very few people happen to own a PlayStation Vita, the only way to give more players the chance to play this beautiful game was to put it on the PS4.
IGN sat down with Media Molecule to discuss the game and ask questions like “just how much bigger is Tearaway Unfolded? This is what they had to say.
“It’s a hard thing to judge,” says Rex. “A lot of people just want me to say a percentage, and you know it’s not really possible to do that. I think anyone who has played the Vita version will still recognize the environments and the journey they’re going on, but just the act of making it work on a big stage meant we had to scale things up.”
This is particularly noticeable in the more hub-like areas, such as Maypole Fields. There’s a sense of verticality that was absent in the original. “We found that any of the hub areas just needed to be 50% bigger to get that sense of scale. Those areas are much larger.”
The Vita version used pretty much all of the Vita’s quirky features. The camera for taking pictures and putting your face in the game as a cameo, or using the back touch pad to poke your fingers through objects. They plan to implement the same features for the Dual-shock 4 controller and adding more at the same time. Like using the light bar to light paths for the “messenger”. And also be able to use the PlayStation camera for pictures.
Fans of the original will surely love this “remixed” version of the game and newcomers as well. This is a great opportunity for Media Molecule to learn the inner workings of the PS4 so that they can hopefully make a full-fledged sequel to Tearaway.
