With the year halfway over, 2017 has been filled with a slew of amazing titles. With even more exciting titles to come, I take a look at the best games released in 2017 so far. Check to see if your favorite title made the list.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
January brought us the next installment in the famed Resident Evil series. Although this one seemed to take the series in a new vein, it was a fresh look at horror. The Resident Evil story formula of infected that follows the same characters was officially replaced. New characters, a new story, and some new gameplay elements refreshed Resident Evil into a new generation. It was scary fun to bring in the new year. It brings back that Resident Evil 4 feeling with a fresh start. Check it out if you haven’t.
Other honorable mentions from January include:
- Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
- Gravity Rush 2
Horizon Zero Dawn
February was all about this epic PlayStation exclusive that showed players what it means to have exclusives for a console. Aloy, (who we’ve already said deserves to be one of the new faces for PlayStation) and the world Guerilla Games has created has done something special. A company has finally found a way to incorporate creativity, story, graphics, and gameplay into a full package that was nothing short of astounding. The excitement we have for the announcement for DLC at E3 should be enough of an indication of what this game truly means to us.
The Legend Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
March was ALL ABOUT ZELDA. Breath of the Wild proved what a “console seller” really is. This game proved to be the best Zelda game of all time. In some ways, the release of the Switch was eclipsed by Breath of the Wild itself. I’ll be honest though, the game probably wouldn’t have done as well as it did if it weren’t a Zelda title. It is still a look at the future in gaming. Breath of the Wild is definitely one of a kind and the first of its kind and shows Nintendo outdoing other companies with innovation. Weather effects, clothing, the ability to touch any and everything in the world… The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the future, and damn it’s bright.
While Nintendo got Breath of the Wild, PlayStation got another huge exclusive contender in Neir: Automata. Combat, story, and uniqueness describe what was created at Platinum Games. We all know them for their fluid combat and great experiences, and that’s exactly what Neir: Automata provided. The game was a combination of so many different yet complimentary styles. This was another title that would show the uniqueness of the PlayStation and its exclusive catalog.
Wins April. Possibly the year. Enough said. Here’s MY REVIEW.
- Little Nightmares
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Though May had some releases, none of them stood out to me. This brings me to May.
June was saved by Tekken 7. This month brought the fighting game of the year so far. Move over Injustice and Street Fighter, Tekken 7 has exactly what you need in a fighter. With so much customization (something I wish was in more fighters), a roster of old and new, integrated final arts and a slow-motion camera that amps up the tension, Tekken 7 has been a great ride. It’s a good lesson in having your fighting game finished, and balancing between casual and professional play. You can check out our review for Tekken 7 HERE.
- Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood
- Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
In July, though the month just started, there are some great titles to come including:
- Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
- Splatoon 2
There you have it, my top games released this year. This, as I’ve expressed, is only the first half of 2017. There are some great titles on the way to as well. Did your favorite title of the year make the list? What are you excited for in the second half of the year? Let us know and get to playing!
