My lovely friend Shai-Ann did an article expressing the ten games she’s looking forward to in 2016. This got me to thinking about the very inclusive year we’ve had for female characters as announcements for video games, and how 2016 will invite us into the lives of more female protagonists and I for one, am excited to see women take a more prevalent role in video games this year. So, who am I excited to see? Check out the list the list below!
Coming exclusively to PS4 this year, Neir Automata is the successor of the original title. A unique collaboration between Square Enix and Platinum Games. A simple description from the PlayStation Blog is as follows, “The world that you see in Nier: Automata is one where androids and mechanized weapons clash in ferocious combat in a barren and deserted wasteland. It’s set after the original game but the story is written in a way which means you don’t have to have played the first one.”
Let’s talk about the main character though, the woman shown in the trailer. Android 2B is the star of this newest title, and her existence doesn’t seem to be allowed in this world. You see, in the world of Neir, these androids aren’t supposed to have emotions, “However, each different model has its own quirks and characteristics and 2B has a comparatively cold and level headed personality.” It looks as if Neir: Automata will give us an in-depth story following this android and her travels, while understanding her own emotions. She’s going to be one bad ass female mech!
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Lara Croft made an exquisite appearance in Tomb Raider, the story that tells her awakening and how she became the titular hero we know today. The original title was a massive hit, and gave players a ton of character development and understanding as we get to see a younger Croft evolve into a badass woman. Now yes, she’s already made her way to the Xbox One, but we will see her on PC this year (and hopefully PS4 eventually) and it’s about time we get to continue the story we fell in love with previously. This new title will make improvements on some of the issues a few players had with the first, including making better/more complex puzzles and tombs to traverse. Lara is in for a brand new adventure and I can’t wait to watch her develop even further as an awesome female character.
Horizon: Zero Dawn
A very interesting an original upcoming title, Horizon: Zero Dawn features a world where
robots, mechanisms and nature collide into an amalgamation of beauty and excitement, but the best part of what we’ve seen so far is the presentation of the main character Aloy. Aloy was designed specifically with making a strong female character to survive this unique and tough world. With strong female leads such as Sarah Connor from Terminator, Ripley from Alien and Ygritte from Game Of Thrones as inspiration, we’ve nothing to to expect but a woman who can traverse this world, probably better than the men. It’ll be exciting to see how she develops and who she becomes after surviving such an intense world. But for Guerrilla Games, they’ve got to deliver an iconic character or face a terrible blow because they’ve got quite a character to create based on their comparisons. If they do it right though, this’ll be one of the first female characters of its kind in a video game. Good luck!
Mirrors Edge Catalyst
Faith Connors was the first of her kind when Mirror’s Edge was first released. A woman who embodies independence, she was a young woman with an understanding of the way things worked that helped her become the runner we met back then. Now, she’s older, and she’s got a sleek look about her that shows off her improved attitude to correspond with her appearance. Once again she returns as the only woman of her kind and it’s going to be a ton of fun seeing where her story goes, and how much she’s changed from where she was when we last saw her.
Not too much is known about the female star of ReCore, but from what we’ve seen we’ve a woman and her companion made from the glowing life orb found in the middle of her dog. Her name is Joule, and the story revolves around her ability to survive in this new world, and her robot companion named Mack. In an interview with IGN we’ve found that Joule will be competing against sandstorms that will alter the terrain, as well as dealing with a faction that is hell bent on not allowing humanity to return to the planet, while assuming that she’s one of the last humans alive on this planet. we’ll find out all about her a little later this year, seeing as ReCore has been delayed until later this year.
So here we’ve got a choice. Dishonored 2 allows you to play as either returning protagonist Corvo Attano from the original title, or his daughter, Emily Kaldwin. Depending on which character you choose, will determine the abilities and powers you get to use. Emily seems to be equipped with a magical grappling hook, she’s got an interesting shadow waling ability, and she seems to be holding a crossbow and an arc mine among other weapons. She’s the assassin on the list who will bring a new mode of play to the title. She’s sophisticated but deadly, and a female force to be reckoned with.
Jenny LeClue Detectivú
A coming of age adventure being described as “cute and creepy” that will encompass a create your own story style adventure. Having successfully met its Kickstarter goal, Jenny LeClue will be making her way to the PS4 this year. A simple description from the PlayStation Blog is as follows “You play as Jenny, a brilliant young detective living in Arthurton. Nothing exciting happens in her small town and she longs for real adventure. She gets more than she bargains for when her mother is accused of murder. Jenny takes on the case of a lifetime and begins an unexpected, dangerous journey to uncover the truth; she soon discovers that nothing in Arthurton is what it seems. Unseen forces will stop at nothing to keep her from the truth. And she will have to use her skills of deduction to find the real killer.”
Another woman on the list that is truly unique, following Jenny will prove to be an emotional and interesting ride, providing a strong female character who seems to be not too much unlike Nancy Drew or Carmen Sandiego. We’re in for a beautiful point-and-click indie title for this year. Can’t wait to meet Jenny and follow her coming of age story.
Senua is the only known character in the title, and she’s one of the most interesting titles on the list. She’s going through an emotional journey, and the studio behind the title have promised “a deeper character in a twisted world with brutal, uncompromising, combat.” The title will come to PS4 and PC simultaneously and the title will explore issues of mental health, another first on this list.
There’s so many extraordinary female characters making their way to our gaming consoles and PC rigs this year, and they’re all so unique and each woman tells a story all her own. What women are you looking forward to this year? Did I miss any of your favorite anticipated female characters? Let me know in the comments below. It’s going to be a great year for gaming!
