It’s that time of the week again my fellow gamers! It’s #ThrowbackThursday and this week is surely a special one. This week we celebrated a momentous day honoring women all around the globe. International Women’s day lets us remember how females contributed to the growth of this planet; In every way. We thought it would be a splendid idea if we took a look at females in gaming who are also influential to their own society, a female like Samus Aran.Samus Aran is the main character from Nintendo’s Metroid franchise. She’s a kick-ass bounty hunter who doesn’t take shit from anybody. Samus is a prime example of female empowerment in gaming. Girls and even guys everywhere can look at her as a role model of sorts. She has been around for 30 years and is a major staple in video game history. To this day, Nintendo continues to push the series as far as it can go.
The last title that Samus was featured in was Metroid: Other M, which came out on the Nintendo Wii back in 2010. We have not had any major Metroid game since then which makes me hope that Nintendo is planning to bring her back in a big way. Other M was not a good representation of this famous bounty hunter. The game went deep into her past back when she started out as a young girl and it made her seem not so much of a bad-ass that she usually is. You weren’t able to use any of your powers unless your superior, Adam, allowed you to. Having a male character control the actions of a female was something that people were really upset about.
Other M was just trying to tackle Samus Aran from a different perspective and it didn’t work out as great as they wanted it to be. In my opinion, the game played well and I had a great time with it. But I want the next Metroid game, whether it be 3d or 2d, to showcase Samus as we know and love her as.
Happy International Women’s Day! What females in gaming do you think are influential in the gaming world? Let us know!
