Ahh, winter. A time for families and friends, getting cozy by the fire, and playing ridiculous winter-themed games. And my favorite of all the snow sports titles, by far, is Amped 3.
Originally released for the Xbox 360 in the winter of 2005, Amped 3 is one crazy, wild, and humorous game. It has a lot of amazing things and features going for it that still make it a blast to play! One of it’s best aspects: the gameplay. Smooth as a baby’s butt. And unlike a lot of sports games where I’ve felt confused or couldn’t remember what combination of buttons did what, Amped 3 made simplicity fun. You go fast down a snow covered mountain, jump, and press a few buttons to do some sick ass tricks. Then you use your thumbsticks to land, and boom! You’ve got the makings of a snowboarding legend.
And just as every legend, you have to have an amazing story! Maybe not up to the narrative par of something like The Last Of Us, but the story of Amped 3 is very funny, quirky, and entertaining throughout. You play as a character you can customize and name and have a group of four friends that shred along side you. Your goal: save enough cash to go on an epic snowboarding adventure with them. Though of course, things don’t go according to plan and your friends dump you, ditch you, and stop talking to you. Sad, I know. But this launches you on a quest to tackle some of the most famous mountains! And…take very odd jobs for even odder characters. Like a beheaded pig that runs an advertising agency.
And with each character that impacts the plot comes a different animation style to tell the story. From anime, to scrapbooking, rap videos and, my favorite, Winerboy’s action figures, you always feel like you are on a rollercoaster. Not to mention the handful of quests you go on. From the 60’s inspired Magic Circles, the Legend Of Zelda-esque Snow Quest, and even a game type that pits you against real professional snowboarders, it has an entertainment value that just keeps giving.
Oh, and it has an amazing soundtrack! True story: found my favorite band EVER because of this game. If you still have an Xbox 360 and want to just have some good fun, this is one of my favorites! Seriously, you won’t regret the 5 bucks this game costs now.
