Howdy Y’all! Is it Thursday already? Guess it’s time for ThrowbackThursday, where we discuss games from the past. Since it’s almost Valentines day and we all know that person who we love/hate, whether it be a family member or significant other, we are going to be talking about video games that we have a love/hate relationship with. Those games that may have been super difficult but you kept playing it anyways. Or one that was just stupid and unplayable but you couldn’t stop going back. The game that almost made me and my friend kill ourselves is the infamous Battletoads for the Sega Genesis.
Battletoads is 2d sidescroller beat em’ up that originally came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. It was later ported to the Sega Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear and the Amiga. You play as these two toads named Rash and Zitz who are on a mission to defeat the evil Dark Queen and rescue their friends.
Even though this game had mostly positive reception, it is regarded as one of the most difficult games of all time. The single player mode is often called straight up “unbeatable”. The game is unforgiving and everything can kill you, including your co-op partner. Yeah there is no “friendly fire” option, so whenever you play this game with a friend, you have to be extremely careful not to hurt each other. Also if one person were to lose all of their hearts, the game would end.
I don’t even remember getting close at all to the end of this game. When me and my friend played it together we could not get through the early levels without failing horribly. We were only about 10-11 years old when we tried playing this gem so maybe If i tried playing it again now I can get through it.
The music was great though, whenever you paused the game this funky beat came on that was probably the best part of the game for me. If you haven’t tried playing Battletoads before, try to find it somewhere just so you can share in the pain.
