It’s the awards season, and with the Oscars just aired a few days ago, we decided to choose some “Oscar” winners of our own. For this weeks #ThrowbackThursday we are going to be giving out our own made up awards for video games. I decided to choose a game that was one of the most original on the PlayStation 2. The winner for the most original and unique game would have to go to Shadow of the Colossus.
Shadow of the Colossus is a game unlike any other. The minimalistic approach that Team Ico went with for this game worked out for them. You play as an unnamed man who is known as “Wander” . You’re tasked with defeating 16 gigantic Colossi that roam this vast and empty land that seems to spread for miles upon miles. The reason he is trying to slay these beasts is because his friend that is a girl is in a deep sleep. He gets promised that the only way for her to recover is to complete this task.
There is only you, your horse and these 16 Colossi in thisworld that you will interact with. There are no NPC’s to talk to, other enemies to defeat, nor any dungeons or dialogue. Shadow of the Colossus is described at times as a puzzle/action game since each Colossus has their own weakness and it’s your job to find out what that weakness is. You might have to jump off your horse, Agro, to get height so you can grab onto a Colossus. In another situation you have to use your arrows and shoot the bottom of one of the Colossi’s feet. There is always a strategy when combating against them which makes each fight totally different from the last.
Shadow of the Colossus is/was a breath of fresh air for the video game industry. There is no filler in this game. It’s just an emotional and compelling adventure that really strikes a chord that no other game does like this one. You have a task and you have a reason for doing this task, to save this girl who Wander obviously cares for.
