After years of handhelds, many of us are still hooked on our Gameboy portables of different iterations. From the original Gameboy, to the Advanced and the Color, there are so many great memories with the Gameboy name brand that it’s hard to completely move away. With the addition of Pokemon Go on mobile phones, we can’t help but remember the fondness of our original handheld experiences, and the first time we played Pokemon. If you’re anything like us, then your first video gaming attachment to Pokemon was on some version of the Gameboy. We chose this week to celebrate one of the original handhelds.
The Gameboy line is extensive, and we’ve all got one that we’ve played for hours on end:
- Gameboy Pocket
- Gameboy Light (Japan release only)
- Gameboy Color
- Gameboy Advanced
- Gameboy Advanced SP
- Gameboy Micro
Before the new DS line, these were the systems we traded across with links and attached spiral lights to for nighttime play. My first personal system was the Gameboy Color, a beautiful lime green system that carried me through my best adventures on the go. Harry Potter, Tarzan, Pokemon Crystal and so many other games got my imagination going and kept me entertained for hours on end in car rides everywhere with my parents. It was the perfect solution to travel for me, and there was a such a variety in title for the Gameboy Color that I never missed a genre.
My next system was the Gameboy Advanced and the Gameboy SP. The GBA had a nicer screen and a new design, but it wasn’t the slip in your back pocket Gameboy shape I came to love. With an even bigger variety, upgraded graphics and lighting, and an all around nicer performance, the Gameboy Advanced was a great system, it just couldn’t compete with the nostalgia of my Gameboy Color.
Though the DS is great, I’ll never forget the awesome times I’ve had with my Gameboy Color. What was your favorite handheld from Nintendo?
