We’re stepping into the 7th generation of consoles this week for our Throwback Thursday topic! The release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in 2008 had me hyped to the max. It was the big third iteration of the popular “fighting” series that I grew up to love. It was also one of the first times that I went to a midnight release for anything and also my first time playing in a tournament. Check out my story after the jump!I was 15 years old when Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released into the wild. Nintendo had done so much to hype the release of the title. First of all, the game had come out in Japan a few months before it came here, which made the wait that much harder. Nintendo created this website called the Smash Bros. Dojo which was updated every weekday with new news concerning the game. They would announce new stages, items, assist trophies and even characters. I would visit the website religiously to make sure that I was the first one to know about any new information.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl had the Subspace Emissary story mode which was pretty amazing when it came to the story of it all. You had all of these characters together trying to defeat an unknown evil together; with glorious CG cut-scenes and all. I was a bad kid and spoiled myself which I wholeheartedly regretted doing. I would go on YouTube after the release of the Japanese version and watch every single cut-scene of the story mode. I just wanted to see everything before anyone else but It made me not so surprised when I eventually bought the game myself, which I bought on midnight at a release tournament/party.
This was the first time that I went to a midnight release of a video game. There was also a tournament the same night which I thought I would be able to win since I thought I was so good at Melee for the Nintendo GameCube. But all of these guys that were there were obviously much older and experienced than I was. There was also the fact that we were forced to play with the Wiimote and Nunchuck, which had me completely dumbfounded since I was used to the Cube controller. So yes, I lost the tournament but I did manage to win my first two matches with Lucas! So I bought the game, went home, and played the game like a maniac for about a year or two. This game was so much fun and added so much to the franchise. The story mode was kind of bashed at by reviewers but I thought it was something special. There’s nowhere else where you can watch all of these Nintendo characters, plus Solid Snake/Sonic, in these high quality cut scenes that are hilarious to watch. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are great but I feel like it’s missing that big mode that Brawl had.
What’s your favorite Smash Bros. game? And did you enjoy the Subspace Emissary mode as much as I did? Let me know in the comments!
