Love is in the air, and for those who game with their significant other (or game alone, no shame) now is the perfect time to reflect on the top 5 PS2 romances that helped shape me into who I am today.
Viewtiful Joe & Sexy Silvia (Viewtiful Joe 2)
While I was way too young to understand the love affair between the action hero protagonists of Viewtiful Joe 2, what’s most important is that they worked together as a team and fought down the villainous organization “Gedow” with their mixture of long and close range abilities. Using various movie effects, fighting with these two casually making innuendos was a joy and if a Viewtiful Joe 3 showed up at E3 this year, I wouldn’t complain.
Tidus & Yuna (Final Fantasy X)
What happens when you combine an obnoxious laugh with one of the most soft spoken protagonists of the 21st century? You get the slippery “I can breath in water” love scene that develops between Tidus and Yuna in Final Fantasy X. It’s a great journey start to finish featuring “I’m going to rip my hair out” emotions while you beg Tidus to just make something out of their strangely comfortable for strangers friendship. Regardless, it’s a dream seeing these two finally come together with an ending that makes you wish you never stopped grinding (for XP that is).
Sly Cooper & Carmelita Fox (The Sly Cooper Series)
Nothing sends sparks in the air more than Carmelita Fox constantly gunning down Sly Cooper with her shock pistol. Needless to say, this cat and mouse (or raccoon and fox) relationship kept me on my toes as my adolescent 7 year old mind couldn’t comprehend a criminal loving a cop and vice versa. A great series that helped define 3D platforming stealth mechanics, this cutesy couple that may have been the bleak start of furry conventions still goes down as one of my top video game romances.
Kratos and All of the Above (God of War)
Kratos gets around and that’s a fact. When he’s not ripping heads off gods, he’s turning heads with that voluptuous white bod cause that’s what happens when you get cursed for killing your wife and child. From shacking it up with various Greek females to the wondrous Aphrodite, Kratos never has a problem mashing circle when things get in a bind. Moral of the story: spread the love.
Sora and Kairi (Kingdom Hearts)
I think Kingdom Hearts relationships between Kairi & Sora goes down as my base knowledge on how relationships work. It taught me that I should make something for my significant others, not bother with wooden swords on creatures manifested in darkness, and prepare for my best friend to also have the hots for my lady. Needless to say, Sora had some big shoes to fill on top of stopping the Heartless and Organization XIII, and you know what they say about big shoes.
Answer: Big socks (they’re best friends you pervs)
