This is my Top 5 Best Art Direction In Games. In this list, I don’t just look at games with great art, I look for games that apply their art style consistently throughout as a package. So every aspect of the game complements each other like the graphics, the character design, the soundtrack, etc.
One of the few games that fit the saying “every frame a painting.” Almost every screenshot of the game can be printed, and hung on a wall. And running through the game with Amaterasu brings that painting to life as the rich vibrant world is animated with amazing colors and effects with every step you take.
4- Shadow of the Colossus
From the moment you start the game you feel what the director intends to deliver; a gloomy empty colorless world. And from the moment you see the first Colossus, and the soundtrack starts playing, it could almost be enough of an indicator of what this world is and what the protagonist’s mission is. Every sound cue, soundtrack, location, and enemy in the game fits together to paint an amazing epic picture.
3- Hotline Miami
Using colors, light, effects and an amazing soundtrack sealed the deal for Hotline Miami to be absolutely one of the best with great art design. The developers use all those elements effectively transforming the simple 2D overhead graphics into the psychedelic violent trip the game intended to be.
2- Killer 7
Killer 7 was one of the best games that used its low-budget with great creativity. The art style didn’t have many details or graphical fidelity, but the artists used colors and camera angles and produced and amazing art style.
1- Persona 5
Persona 5 is basically the game that gave me the idea to make this list. It is easily the best example of what kind of games I’m listing here. The art style is amazingly consistent from each and every menu to every character, location, and item.
