I’m a huge fan of everything horror. From Videogames, movies and TV shows, to comics, manga, and books, I love it all. I like horror when it’s done with excellent quality, like The Exorcist, Resident Evil, American Horror Story, Uzumaki, and many many others. I also love the other side of horror, when it’s so bad you can’t help but love it. And here’s where this list comes from. When I was a kid I enjoyed some of these movies as actual horror, and what’s magical about them is that I enjoyed them again as an adult as B movies. What I loved, from some of these movies, is how ridiculously bad and hilarious the monsters were. Be warned, there are spoilers! So without further ado, here is my list for Top 5 Worst Horror Movie Monsters Of All Time:
Night of the Lepus (1972) (Raving Rabbids):
During the 70’s there were many horror movies that involved a mob of some kind that attacked humans in a small town. It may have started with Hitchcock’s The Birds in the 60’s, but it definitely boomed in the 70’s and 80’s. There were Zombies, Rabid dogs, gangsters, swarms, clowns, and tomatoes (Yes you read that right. Killer tomatoes). So it was this ridiculous direction that Hollywood took that birthed the cult classic Night of the Lepus where a mob of mutant giant rabbits terrorizes a small town in Arizona.
The movie was shot mostly, and impressively, with real rabbits running through miniature towns to make them look like giant man eaters. As far as I know, the movie flopped with the critics due to the rabbits actually looking cute despite being huge. The movie gained cult following later on and released to home video in 2005.
The Happening (2008) (The plants)
Like most M. Night Shyamalan movies, the audience is kept in the shadows of what truly is terrorizing our characters. As the movie goes as the characters believe that what’s causing a widespread mass suicide is a bio-terrorist attack. Near the end, we are treated with a twist as our protagonist stare at the horizon and realize that what was terrorizing them was caused by the plants. It was their time to hit humans back for the many years of abuse they endured from us.
Critters (1986) (The Critters)
Critters is about an alien race that look like…how do I put it? Imagine mixing the Troll dolls with the Goombas from Mario. Add a lot more hair and sharp teeth. Oh yeah and they roll about and basically eat everything. The story is that these Critters were prisoners on a spaceship. They took control of the ship and made their escape heading to earth. So, a couple of space alien bounty hunters take the job of hunting them down, and for the bounty hunters to be able to move around humans without being suspicious, one of them assume the form of rockstar named Johnny Steel. Apparently, the movie was somehow successful and spawned not one or two but three sequels.
Deadly Friend (1986) (BB)
Wes Craven was behind so many horror movies from the 80’s. Most of them were shit, only a couple caught on and became cult-classics. Deadly Friend was just one of those awful films that didn’t catch on, with great reason. The story is about a whiz-kid that built a robot named BB. He moves into a new place, and soon he meets “The girl next door” and they get to know each other. So, the girl has an abusive father with a drinking problem blah blah blah. The father knocks the girl and she falls on a flight of stairs and she becomes brain dead. So our whiz-kid being the whiz-kid he is takes the AI chip he built into BB and installs it into the girl. Soon he activates her but she acts more robot like and in no time starts her killing spree. The ending is what made the movie for me. The girl dies again and as they check her body she starts moving and you see her skin tear from the inside and BB is born again.
IT’S ALIVE! (1974) (The Baby)
First of all, the trailer for It’s Alive is one of the best trailers I’ve ever seen. The only issue I see with it is that they forgot to mention the movie title.
The movie starts with a couple expecting their second baby. So they go to the hospital for the delivery, and when the baby is born the doctor discovers that it’s deformed with fangs and monster like features and shit. So what do you think the reaction would be from a professional doctor in a case like this? You guessed that right, he tries to suffocate and kill the baby. I’m no doctor, but I think this doctor is a tad unprofessional especially since he fails to kill the baby. Actually, the baby kills him and makes a crawl for it. So, the baby escapes from the hospital and makes his way home. How did he know where his home is, I have no idea. Anyway, he, like others from this list, starts his own killing spree, and we are treated to an end where the baby’s father throws him to the air and the cops shotgun-off the baby to kingdom come. Poor, poor deformed baby.
That is my list of the worst horror monsters in movies of all time. Let me know if you agree with the list, or if you think there are monster more deserving to be on the list.
