Rumors and hopes of the anime Bleach have been swept aside in light of a new movie suddenly in the works. Warner Bros confirmed just a few days ago that they have planned to develop the movie and has it currently set for a 2018 release in Japan.
The film will be directed by Shinsuke Sato and will star Japanese actor Sota Fukushi in the lead role. The movie will be based on the anime in which Ichigo is a high school student who becomes a soul reaper. With his new powers, Ichigo protects the human race and those he holds dear from hallows that constantly go after people in the world of the living.
There are no details on what the movie will actually be about but director Shinsuke Sato has said we can expect to see the same intense hallow battles in the world of the living and in the Soul Society just as in the anime. And, expect to see the destructive powers of the Zanpaktou sword-fighting on the big screen just as they are in the hit series. It seems more than likely that this film will be something of an origin story for Ichigo, so something based in the earlier arcs will probably be featured.
As a long time fan of Bleach, this seems disappointing since live-action anime based movies are rarely any good. With the manga on its way to the end, making a return of the anime series would have made much more sense. Hopefully the news of this movie being on the way, it will increase the chances of the anime returning.
Currently Warner Bros. has no plans to bring the film stateside, but 2018 is a couple years away so plans could easily change.
