ARMS finally got it’s official release date (june 12th) on April 12th during the Nintendo Direct broadcast live, this was by far one of the more jam packed Direct’s they’ve done and you can read more on the announcements here. But I have been excited for ARMS since the start of the year really. I’d like to give a brief run down why some lucky Switch owners should be too!
If anyone reading this is a regular then you may have caught my article on the Switch UK Premiere back in January where I was lucky enough to attend, this is where I got my first actual taste of ARMS and where my excitement truly built for the game.
I didn’t think much of it when they revealed the game last November, but it truly is something that needs to be played to be appreciated. This is something Nintendo seem to do a lot and it can work in their favour sometimes, but it is a risky move! Trailers and gameplay footage just don’t do it justice. I mean it looks awesome and with the announcement of new characters and features (which I’ll discuss in a minute) my hype has gone into over drive.
Above, you can see new character Minmin. Of course all of the characters are new, but when I played back in January there were only 2 stages to play on and it was pre determined and there were just four characters showcasing the different types you could use. In the gameplay footage shown in the Nintendo Direct there were so many new stages we hadn’t seen, new gameplay features such as 2 vs 2 battles which is GREAT!
Then you’ve got the option of turning the motion controls off which we already knew and that is going to be a god send when the game launches as I can see people avoiding it because of the motion controls even though they do work really well. I just know it’s not everybody’s thing.
Something they kept quiet as well was the different elemental features for the arms you fight with, such as earth, fire electricity etc. That feature was certainly absent when I played the game and there’s so much strategy and depth to it. You can’t just punch after punch and hope you’ll win, you really have to think about who you’re fighting and where your standing, what kind of punch to use. It’s crazy how deep the game is.
Minmin has an awesome dragon arm too which shoots lasers, I mean what more could you want! If I wasn’t excited enough already, everything announced has just cemented my joy for the game. Mark my words, if Nintendo utilise the online mode with the choice of battling online just like Splatoon then ARMS is gonna do amazingly well!
