Have you heard of a little game called Dungeons & Dragons? What about Magic: The Gathering? These huge hits in the tabletop gaming scene are heavy hitters everyone has head of, and the company behind them Wizards of the Coast, is opening a digital studio.
In an exciting move, Wizards of the Coast has announced that they’ll be reimagining Magic: The Gathering and other Wizards titles in a digital format. Wizards of the Coast President Chris Cocks has detailed just what this means in a blog post on the Wizards site. You can check out the post in its entirety, but here’s a snippet of what we can look forward to from the upcoming digital studio.
“We will bring our characters and worlds to other games and experiences. What would it be like to throw fireballs as a Planeswalker in an MMO, or quest for treasure with your friends in a D&D augmented-reality game? We want to play games like this too, so we hired David Schwartz, an industry veteran with 25 years of experience leading projects at Microsoft, Electronic Arts, THQ, LeapFrog Enterprises, and Midway Games. He is building a publishing team to explore partnerships and collaborations that will bring Magic and D&D to unexpected settings, genres, and platforms.”
We can look forward to extreme talent within this new studio. The “team includes experienced Wizards game designers and industry talent from Dire Wolf Digital, Valve Corporation, Cryptic Studios, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Activision, BioWare, and many others.”
The most important part of the post is the excitement of Wizards bringing their properties into new platforms and genres. Wit the resurgence of the popularity of Dungeons & Dragons in mainstream media, it’ll be great to see a proper D&D iteration of Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon’s Keep, or a closer tie-in to that Teen Titan’s Go D&D episode. Maybe a Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering cross-over? Who knows what we’ll get but I’m sure it’ll be nothing but fun.
