Two of Bethesda’s iconic first-person shooters are coming to Nintendo Switch and nobody saw it coming. Doom 2016 and the highly anticipated Wolfenstein 2 are both making their way to the hybrid console. Neither game has an official release date yet, with Doom coming sometime this holiday and Wolfenstein 2 becoming available in 2018.
This is massive news for Nintendo fans everywhere as it does seem to brighten the future of the third party AAA landscape for the Switch. If Bethesda is willing to put this much stock into Nintendo then it is very likely we could see other big developers follow suit. While some were excited by the news that Rock Star Studios announced a port of L.A. Noire for the Switch earlier in the week, many were quick to point out that it is a last generation game. It was still impressive to see last gen games like L.A. Noire and Skyrim running on a portable device, but Doom and Wolfenstein 2 are both current gen games.
It will certainly be interesting to see the compromises that Bethesda will have to make to get these games running on the Switch, but based on the footage shown in the announcement for Doom, nothing appeared to be compromised. Wolfenstein 2 is a completely different story with no game play footage to be shown, obviously a sign that it could still be in early development.
Regardless both games are perfectly suited for Switch, as they lean heavy on their single player campaigns with the Wolfenstein series not even featuring online multiplayer. This makes both games perfect for gaming on the go and a great opportunity to jump into Doom if you happened to miss out on its initial release.
