It’s no secret that I’m looking forward to World of Final Fantasy. The game is a unique mixture of genres that I love. On top of that, it is adorable. With the demo being recently released, and the game being available in just a few days, I wanted to share my impressions. Spoiler Alert, I loved every minute of it.
World of Final Fantasy is a very unique title in the Final Fantasy franchise. It’s definitely not something you’d expect when you think of Final Fantasy. Yet at the same time, it’s completely familiar. The demo has you playing through a dungeon, that will give you about 30 minutes to an hours worth of gameplay. The dungeon is an open field with chance encounters that randomly pop up similar to Final Fantasy X.
My first impressions were “this game is freaking adorable.” You instantly gain access to both new characters Lann and Reynn, as well as a few minions they have with them. The fun though is taking in all the new monsters on the field. For fans, the monsters are all familiar. For people who haven’t played, the same creatures are charming and it’s a great introduction to the vast monster is Final Fantasy.
While the demo was intended for 30 minutes to an hour, I’ve got over two hours logged in, and I’ve caught every available monster on the field. The ease of play and the ability to slip in and out of different forms makes the game easily accessible. What I really enjoyed though was the potential for so much strategy underneath the engaging interface.
The demo has done nothing but increased my anticipation for the full game. What contributed to this was the tease of so many layers underneath the game. Stacking monsters on top of your head by size, or riding them otherwise adds so many different strategies. Each couple of monsters gives new abilities, and the demo allows for experimenting with them. The game runs on an ATB (active time battle) system. You can choose to play using wait mode, semi-active or active mode. There’s also an easy battle menu and a classic battle menu. Both sport great design and easy user interface, one is for classic FF fans, the other for newbies.
World of Final Fantasy mixes Pokémon with Kingdom Hearts, and Chibi versions of your favorite FF characters. If you get the chance, check out the demo and see for yourself the many layers of World of Final Fantasy. So far it seems great for newcomers, and a real treat for veterans. You’ll get a surprise with the summon you’re provided to use. Especially Final Fantasy X fans.
The World of Final Fantasy demo is available right now on the PS4. World of Final Fantasy will be available in full on October 25th on PS4 and PS Vita.
