My reaction to the second trailer for Death Stranding so far: Uhm…what did I just watch?
Very little is known about Kojima Productions’ new game. Other than a teaser trailer released during Sony’s E3 press event, we have heard very little news. Not that it’s surprising. Death Stranding is in production and isn’t set to release before 2019. But if you were hoping to get some details about plot or story, this was not it. What it was, however, was an announcement about a new character, who will be played by Mads Mikkelsen, and a peek into the dark world that awaits us.
First, let’s talk about the things we do know. Mads Mikkelsen has officially been listed as an actor on Death Stranding. Mikkelsen is most recently recognized for his role in the TV show Hannibal, which is based off the book Silence of the Lambs. If you don’t know what either of those are…let’s just say it should be easy for him to bring a disturbing performance to this dark and crazy looking game.
And that officially wraps what we know. The rest of this trailer relies on symbolism and imagery that is creepy, grotesque, and strangely cool looking. But, now I’d like to point out some things that I think will make this quite an interesting game. However, please bare in mind, these are not based on facts, just the things we have been shown so far in both trailers.
We have some sort of crisis involving babies. In the teaser from earlier this year, Norman Reedus was pictured crying over a dead infant on a death beach. Now, we have a man who looks very similar to Guillermo del Torro (who worked with Kojima in the past) clutching an infant in some sort of life support tube? Anyone else getting Matrix vibes here? Then we have the imagery of a baby doll being pulled under a bridge by the same black ooze that is covering a group of soldiers, which leads me to believe that it is used to spy on people in a very war-torn looking world. It’s kind of genius, actually. No matter how frightening dolls look…you just tend to kind of stare at them right?
We are also shown a tranquil, upside down rainbow resting in the sky as what appears to be biomechanical tanks and airplanes pass overhead. And soldiers attached to one another by demon umbilical cords that would make Satan himself giddy with excitement. This leads me to believe we are looking at a futuristic dystopian world, but again, just a guess.
I don’t know guys. I’ve watched the trailer at least five times now and I’m still a bit mind blown. And everytime I hit the replay button on Youtube, I see more minor details that grab me and make me question what the f is happening! Like that everyone has huge scars! Norman had them on his stomach. The random baby clutcher in the trainer has one across his forehead! Why?!
Kojima stated he wanted his new game to be edgy…yeah, I think he about nailed that. Only time will tell how this story, and game, plays out. But after this trailer, I’m definietly looking forward to more! Do you have any super early predictions about the game?
