Holidays and celebrations have kept us quite busy these past few weekends at WTFGamersOnly, not to mention some situations going on all around the world. What better way to relax and kick-back after all the busy work and nonsense than playing video games? It’s what they’re made for right? Adventuring to new worlds, learning new skills and feats, and eventually becoming the hero of our own story, or of course catching Pokémon, driving the Regalia or riding atop a Chocobo. Whatever it may be, here’s what we’re playing this weekend, what about you?
Sadly some of us are too busy playing this weekend to write, which is completely understandable since two very big names came out recently. Pokémon Sun & Moon as well as the incomparable Final Fantasy XV. Admittedly none of us who are playing those two titles had time to write about the experience except for the amazing Toby, because we’re a bit too engrossed in them. That doesn’t mean we aren’t playing anything though.
Toby – Pokémon Sun
This weekend (and all week) I have been playing Pokémon Sun! Now over the years I wouldn’t say I’ve been a huge fan of the series, but looking back through my collection of DS and 3DS games it seems I am more so than I thought. I did have Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Gold but then somewhere after that I stopped buying them and skipped to Pokémon Pearl, Pokémon Black, Pokémon X & Pokémon Omega Ruby…leading me up to the latest in the series.
I’m about 10 hours into the game so far, I’ve completed my first trial and it is actually far more enjoyable than I was expecting. The series has never been one to change the staple flow of things, but subtle adaptions over the years have led to Pokémon Sun feeling fresh, exciting and full of personality. The fact that the characters are now ACTUAL people size is amazing, the fact you can now transfer Pokémon in and out of your party straight after catching them is amazing and even in your PC you don’t have to navigate multiple menu’s! Then there’s the small change of having NO GYMS!! I mean Game Freak have really pushed the boat out this time. Yeah some of the new Pokémon may look a little questionable, but when the game plays as enjoyable as it is I think they can be forgiven.
I’m so excited to visit the other islands as well, there’s a lot of other small changes that add up to a bigger difference throughout the game that I’m still noticing. I also think the choice of not using the 3D was a wise one, I barely ever used it in Pokémon X and it always slowed it down!
Marissa – The Sims 4 City Living
Just when I think I’m out, Sims pulls me right back in. That’s right, this weekend I’m playing Sims 4 with the new City Living expansion. I played around a bit last night (mainly creating a new batch of people), but I’m liking it. Each apartment you live in has a unique trait of its own, adding benefits, or interesting obstacles for your Sims to encounter. For instance, I’m living in the Arts Quarter of San Myshuno. My apartment is “historical” and thus requires that no matter what I do to the building, I can not remove a plaque dedicated to some former hot shot artists that used to live there. Some lots are haunted and cursed. Others have noisy or mean neighbors. So it’s not just about how much you will be spending on a place in-game, but the traits that come with it. Kind of interesting.
Sims 4 also is host to new festivals and even conventions in the latest expansion. I just took part in the Humor and Hijinks fest in the Arts Quarter. During the timed event, you pick a side, the light-hearted jokesters or the mean-spirited pranksters. As the night goes on, you must perform certain actions that benefit your side. The winners get money and fireworks, and get to watch a lovely fireworks show too.
I’ve yet to really get into the new career choices, but I think it’s the weakest point of the expansion. While watching the trailers, I was excited for the political career, with the protests and public speaking, but in reality you just send your Sim off to work like most of the other jobs. It seems like you can perform other tasks and assignments outside of your Sim’s work time. But, again, I haven’t really touched the new careers just yet. But when I do get Sims 4 all to myself this weekend, you bet I will!
Forbes – Titanfall 2
This weekend I’ll continue playing Titanfall 2, the sequel to the Xbox One launch title from the creators of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
You assume the role of a Pilot, military badass in the army equipped with jet thrusters, wall running capabilities, and immense speed that creates fast paced and well flowing combat. Once you lay out AI grunts and real player Pilots, call down your titan and take the second half of the battle in a mechanized robot showdown.
Titanfall 2 fixed everything from the previous title, creating an amazing single player campaign, a plethora of customization options for multiplayer, and iconic Titans that all adhere to different playstyles.
Currently I’ve been using the Titan Ronin, a sword wielding, phase shifting, shotgun firing badass that doesn’t have much health, but does crazy amounts
of damage. If you’re a fan of Overwatch, consider him to be Genji with Roadhogs weapon.
Titanfall 2 stands out to me because it doesn’t only excel the category of space shooters with mechanized robots, but their free DLC model makes me compelled to contribute towards the success of this game so other franchises won’t be afraid to give out maps and add on content to its fans for free. Constantly gaming communities are divided by fans that will purchase DLC and others who don’t want to. Respawn Entertainment doesn’t want its fans to feel like they need to “pay to win”, and rather have them be on the level playing field with the rest of the Pilots.
If you’re interested in joining me on the Frontier, message me @BobBichn66 on Xbox One and lets prepare for Titanfall!
Jerel – SMITE
As for myself, I’m waiting for Christmas morning to crack open Pokémon Moon and try out Final Fantasy XV on the PS4 Pro. Until then it’s time for me to try out SMITE this weekend on the Xbox One. Marissa has on more than one occasion wrote about what seems to be one of the most addicting games in the world. Plus it’s free so why not? You may catch her and myself online playing SMITE this weekend and if you do, feel free to join us! Be prepared though, it’s my first time and who knows what might happen.
So, what are you all playing this weekend? Is it Pokémon or FFXV? What do yo think of the games so far? Let us know in the comments below!
