NINTENDO SWITCH IS HERE! The weekend starts well with the newest console from Nintendo on our HORIZON (get it?) and of course that means some of us will be deep diving into the Switch with the newest Zelda title Breath of the Wild. Of course the newest PS4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn also has us all jaw-dropped with its gorgeous scenery, unique style and more. Check out what we’re playing this weekend on our #WTFAreWePlaying segment and see what we’re looking forward to and loving about these titles.
Toby – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
This weekend I will be playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s THE most excited I have been for any Zelda game to date and it’s clear to see why if you’ve read anything about it over this past week. Critics are raving about it and even people who aren’t usually Zelda fans have been taking a keen interest it seems! I can’t wait to delve into this expansive Hyrule, I played a little of the opening at the UK premiere back in January and even that short 20-25 minutes had my curiosity peaked.
Everything about this Zelda looks set to shake up the usual formula whilst still staying true to the series roots. I really just hope this doesn’t let me down but i’m 99.9% confident this is going to be one hell of an adventure and what a way to kick off the Switch!
(At the time of this articles publishing, Toby has received his Switch and is playing so much of Breath of the Wild that he’s neglected all of us. He is thoroughly enjoying the game and taking gorgeous screenshots).
Marissa – Horizon Zero Dawn
It may not really be a surprise that one of us here at WTFGamersOnly is playing Horizon Zero Dawn. And much like the reviews say, this game deserves a LOT of praise and I plan to put a lot of hours into it before Persona 5 and Yooka-Laylee are set to release.
I’ve talked about this game before, mainly on our podcast, but what made me most excited about Horizon Zero Dawn was the gameplay. The controls are so fluid and effortless. Once you learn which buttons do what, you will be able to take control of the main character, Aloy, and really immerse yourself in this incredibly inventive world. From hunting to fighting and interacting with NPCs through some Mass Effect esque dialogue and action options, everything feels smooth and well planned out.
What I didn’t expect was being so sucked into the story. Before the game released, I thought Horizon Zero Dawn would be similar to the Far Cry franchise. Although control and crafting wise, I still stand by that initial thought…uhm, Far Cry didn’t make me want to tear up within the first 30 minutes of gameplay. Aloy was a precious child who faced a cruel punishment without any explanation and I love that she feels so human, so alive because of this struggle within her to learn the truth and better herself. She’s not just some nameless main character or one that you can push aside in order to better focus on game mechanics. She’s an amazing female character whose ambition and determination come from her heart and her want to prove to everyone, including herself, that she matters in this world filled with dangers and destruction.
However, I’m only a few hours in now (quite a bit of that has been devoted to side-quests), but…yeah, I’m going to be playing this nonstop for the next month AT LEAST! In fact, I’m off to do that now, so deuces everyone!
Jerel – Overwatch
Without a Switch of my own (for now) I’m missing out on the Zelda hype. To compensate I did pick up Horizon Zero Dawn to play with Marissa, but first SEASON 4 OF OVERWATCH HAS BEGUN. I need to do my placement matches and see where I rank this season.
Of course Overwatch has just revealed their newest hero Orisa, and the Overwatch hype has definitely returned because of it. I can’t wait to try out the new tank with my team, and I’ll be practicing some tank stationary setups as well as some point counters for the flood of Orisa I’ll soon be up against. It’ll definitely change the meta of Overwatch and the team compositions for competitive play. It’s a quick round-up between seasons so we’re back in the game. Can’t wait to get some hands on time with Orisa as well.
What are you all playing this weekend? Let us know in the comments, or tell us how you’re enjoying what we’re playing!
